Since 1932

In 1932, Richard and Lucile Knupper (an old German name, pronounced k-NOOP-ers) started Knupper Nursery on the three-acre site where Culver’s is located now. In 1968, John Heaton joined the company, became General Manager and gradually bought the business, becoming sole owner in 1988.

In December 1990, a devastating fire destroyed the original store, greenhouses and offices that were at the corner of Old Hicks and Rand Road. We rebuilt bigger and better just north of the original site on property that had previously been our growing fields. The new facility opened in the spring of 1993. We added the shade house in the spring of 1995 and the very first greenhouse in 1996. In 1997 we added an outdoor, in-ground pond and a complete water gardening department. The second greenhouse and store addition was completed in spring 1999, and the retractable roof shade house was added in 2001. In 2007 we doubled our parking to accommodate more customers, and for spring 2015, we added our Pottery Paradise patio.

Knupper's Today

Today, Knupper’s is owned an operated by John and Sue Heaton. Both are very active in the business on a daily basis, and they love what they do! We’re proud to be members of the Garden Center Group,  Illinois Green Industry Association (IGIA), Rotary Club of Palatine, and Palatine Chamber of Commerce.

Our store features houseplants, gardening supplies, garden art, furniture, and giftware. During the planting season we have three full acres of trees, shrubs, evergreens, and fruits — all ready to plant, and our indoor and outdoor greenhouses house the area’s best selection of quality plants: colorful annuals, exotic tropicals, hardy perennials, groundcovers, herbs, and vegetables.
